But suffer alike we do.
In America there are two types of people those who have suffered and those who have not. I firmly believe the latter should not not be able to speak for the former as there is a distinct difference. There is a difference between knowledge and experience. There is a difference between being knowledgeable about poverty and actually having\lived in poverty.

sometimes I have to wonder what side I'm really on? I think I know, but then I read about someone else and I'm suddenly thankful for all I have... being on the edge sucks, you never really know what's going on
It's too bad people couldn't be assigned a number (1-10) based on how much suffering they've endured in their life.
Then if you went to Wal-Mart and saw that your cashier was a 9, there's no way you'd even think of giving them a hard time.

The second I read "assign people a number" my mind jumped to the holocaust...and I think we'd all agree a second holocaust would be a bad thing!!

Wouldn't some of it have to do with your perception of how bad things really are?
I mean I was technically homeless for a short time on the Outerbanks, but not homless sleeping on the beach or under a pier or anything. So really it wasn't THAT bad. It still sucked royally, but it could have been worse right?
I don't know everyone will always have an opinion and until there are distiguished limitations to the amount of shittiness (yes I said shittiness) one has endured, people will always try to speak for other people.
I guess is all comes down to how you perceive your own suffering. More or less, people should take into consideration other's perception before trying to speak for them, in my humble opinion. Then there wouldn't really be any sides.
I would say there is being poor, and there is POVERTY. I would say anyone who seriously wondered how they would pay for several subsequent meals, has very poor or no housing, and doesn't have appropriate clothing has a much different experience than someone who just has to be very careful with their money.
