I would like to take a chain of restaurants around the country and run the following experiment.
Abolish Tipping
(I say this even as a former waiter and bar tender)
I would take average food sales per shift and add 20% to the food sales coming up with a shift wage for waitresses that would be roughly what they are making now. Some shifts would be worth more money then others etc..
I have been to a few countries where you just don't tip and service doesn't seem to be any worse..
I would like to see what would happen to the following....
1.) Would service be better or worse if there was no expectation of tip on the part of the server or the client.
(I have a sneaking suspicion that some of the rudest customer think it is ok to be a dick because they are giving you a tip)
2.) Would food sales go down?
(I would say the decline would be small if any. As a good waiter you never suggest the most expensive thing on the menu any ways)
3.) Would people who frequent at this establishment lose weight?
(But it would be interesting to see if you were not trying to drive food sales would people eat less and lose weight?)
4.) Would business go up or down?
(I would think business would go up, but it could also go down since tipping is more about you as a customer feeling good then it is about the wait staff.)

But I like the fact that I can reward or punish bad service. I always give 20% unless I have some dildo serving me., then hey get 10-15% depending...
Honestly, I think with the level of crappy ass service we receive pretty much every where we go now, it wouldn't make much of a difference, so I would love to see it happen!
The servers are going to be rude anyways, so at least we can save a few dollars!!
The other night, I had the most interesting experience at a bar/restaurant. There were four of us, and we ordered food and drinks and sat there for about 4 hours or so. The waitress was downright horrible. I only drank 3 beers mainly because it took her so damn long to come back and refill us. Then she gave us each a bill with an automatic 20% gratuity on it, lol. I couldn't believe it! I talked to the manager and he said that it was common on a busier night that the servers do this to make sure they get enough money because people sit there for longer periods of time.
Screw that! I don't care how long we sit there, we would've had a higher bill and therefore a higher tip if she actually showed up at least every 20 minutes or so, but it was like every 45 minutes that she came to the table!
I'm sorry, here I am going off on a rant, lol.
I do not think food prices should go up at all, but I'm all in favor of abolishing tipping. Watiers/waitresses should give good service because it's their job, not because they're hoping for a good tip. As a consumer, i shouldn't have to pay tips in addition to the price of the food, It should be the employers problem to paytheir employees a liveable wage, not mine.
But that all goes back to liveable wages, and the inability we have to keep our cost of living and our incomes in tandem.
I think that servers would still push food sales because even though tips wouldn't be based on it, there would be some incentive by management-or there should be.
Especially from the chef. I could talk about this for a while, but any good establishment has incentives for upselling-even without tips.
I agree though-just pay them right and eliminate tipping.
I'm just looking forward to the season premiere of "Hell's Kitchen" on Fox next month.
I've lived in Europe where you don't tip at all and I think it was great there because the waietrs and waitresses actually got paid like human beings.
I once tipped a german cab driver five american dollars and she cried. It was really weird.
