Straight?

We have all heard things like, "I have been smoking for 20 years." or "I have been smoking since I was 13."

Well that is not really the case if you smoke a pack a day and we say you actively smoke a cigarette for five minutes you actually spend a good part of your day not smoking.

Lets run the numbers

20 smokes in a pack at 5 minutes each = 100 minutes smoking.
24 hours in a day 60 minutes in an hour = 1440

If we divide the numbers we see that you are smoking roughly 7% of the day leaving 93% to do other stuff.

So the smoker who has been smoking for 20 years and is so tough has really only been smoking for 1.4 years...

sorry this stuff is on my mind lately..

Well, when you put it in perspective like that... I feel much better about it, really.

They should say "I have been a smoker for...."

Too much time on the hands. No matter what smoking is bad, on the smoker and the non-smokers, on the world. Plus it stinks and turns your teeth yellow, grody.

That's an excellent point, but I think there's another issue as well -- all the smokers I know spend a ton of time finding a place to smoke (even in metro Detroit where there are more smokers than anywhere in the U.S.), buying cigarettes, worrying about running out of cigarettes, and excusing themselves in and out of groups to smoke. That's why even as a non-smoker, I let people smoke in my house which my Texas friends think is a) insane or b) retro. I can't stand making people go outside in the cold. Keep the faith with the quitting thing!
