I wonder when exactly it all started. Some one turned to their friend, family, lover and stated Happy Birthday, I Love You, Congratulations. That person then turned to them and said can I get that in writing.
I can understand the card in the old days when you had to communicate though the mail. Your expressions and thoughts had to be reduced to ink to make it to your destination. Today though we have the ability to call someone and personally talk to them. We can web cam with them and see them across great distances. We can get in our cars and drive to see them, personally touch them and give them our best wishes.
Yet, people will complain that we have lost the skill of impersonal letter writing. It leaves me a little confused. All of this technology brings people closer together and we still base our lowest common denominator on how much we care at the level of a card.
Don't call...write. I want it on paper a legal contract of feelings.
People can have closer to the real thing yet they prefer the distance of a card. I suspect somewhere deep it is because we really don't like each other.
To me a card says, "I like you but not enough to get you anything useful."
It is a measuring stick people use to judge who likes them, "He didn't even get me a card" I like this because it implies that you didn't like them enough to go out of your way for them before you went out of your way to spend actual time with them.
People fill drawers with cards used a black mail, remember when you said this? As if you can't change as if the card is mortgage of demanded feelings able to be cashed sometime in the future.
PS. If you think people like the card because of the personal shit you write on it. Write down all of your feeling on a five dollar bill. Ask them a week later if you can see the bill......$10.00 says they spent that shit already. Your private feelings of the deepest part of you traded at a gas station for a candy bar and a soda.
You don't need a card you got me:)

--Once when I was right out of college I got My Dad, Mom, and both Grandmothers presents for Christmas, but as I was a little Tight, I didn't include cards --(I have very similar sensibilities as you do on this card business) My Grandmother tried to be tactful, but it really bugged her, She flat out said, "its ok if you dont get me a card but your dad?" and trust me it wasnt "ok" that I didnt get her a card.... She is like Pavlovs Dog she is so conditioned on getting a card...
How else can you tell someone their a giant bag of douche if you don't put it on a card?
I tend to write that message in honey across someones windsheild..lol
Cards for holidays... I don't do those... but I do like to send cards for no reason at all. Those are the fun kinds of cards.
So when I send you your card... I should include money with my handwritten letter professing my undying love for you?
I'm with you. Except I never buy cards. My husband distinctly remembers me laying down several ground rules when we were dating - first of which was to knock it off with the cards. They are a waste of money. period.
My sister-in-law fills her calendar every January with the necessary cards for the year. Then she insures they arrive on the 'important' day. I find this much more impersonal than the telephone calls I make.
These are the only cards fit to send anymore...LOL.

I'm not gonna lie-I love the card. I love that they require someone to pick which one they want to send you and then they have to address is and send it. It shows effort. I also love seeing handwriting. I don't know why-it fascinates me. I imagine years from now when we're all dead and someone finds an old book of mine that has a card tucked into the jacket (if people don't inscribe my books, I put the card that came with the gift inside) and wondering what my story was-who the person who gave me the card was...
Plus, mail is fun to get.
Is this post really saying that you don't get cards and you really want to so you're turning your sadness into anger?
I can make that go away you know. ;)
I'm jumping on this bandwagon! I'm the worst about sending cards and if I actually manage to send one, it never arrives on time. Hell, it never leaves my posession anywhere close to on time. Now I can just tell everyone it's because I care so deeply.
I never ever write christmas cards. I don't see the point in them at all.
Everyone knows that it's christmas, they don't need a card reminding them about it.
The only time I like a card is if it's sent on a random day. Just a hey, I was thinking about you and wanted to surprise you card. Those are the ones I keep.
i like random cards as well. like the one i got yesterday!
it's so very nice to get something in the mail other than a bill.... but I must agree with lots of peeps, the best kind are the random -for no reason ones
(ps hahaha speaking of writing on someone's windshield... remember when we did that with lipstick once? hahaha)
